The skin is constantly exposed to environmental air pollutants such as smoke, ozone (O3), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), oxides, and particulate matter (PM). Some effects of constant exposure are skin aging, inflammatory or allergic skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis or acne, and one of the worst possible effects -- skin cancer.
Poor Lifestyle Choices
Smoking, drinking, and bad food choices can also take a toll on your skin. Smoking once cigarette can constrict blood flow, (consequently decreasing flow of oxygen) in the skin for up to an hour and a half. Alcohol dehydrates the skin, and too much drinking also deprives the skin of vital vitamins and nutrients. A skin disorder that starts with a tendency to flush easily (but can eventually lead to facial disfigurement) called Rosacea is linked to alcohol. Foods with high glycemic index such as sugars and simple carbs are also said to cause acne as an increase in insulin also
Stress stimulates a chemical response in our bodies that makes the skin more reactive and sensitive. The stress hormone, cortisol, also signals the skin to create more oil, making it prone to clogging and infection. Stress can also prolong the healing period of skin.
