What Causes Bloating?

Are you constantly annoyed by that bloated feeling but don’t know what causes it?

1. Eating too, much too soon

Let’s start with the obvious. Our stomachs are only the size of a fist, so naturally, when you eat a lot, it will expand. What’s more, if you eat too quickly, you will take in a lot of gas, adding to that bloated feeling. Carbonated drinks are also sure to contribute to that gassy-bloated feeling.


2. Salt

Our body needs salt, but if we eat more than what our body requires, this can lead to bloating, and even more serious conditions such as high blood pressure. Salt will cause the body to retain water, giving you that puffy, bloated look.


3. Simple Carbs and Fructose

Simple carbs like white bread or sugar are sure ways to cause bloating. This is because the carbs from these food enter the blood stream quickly, and the faster the carbs get into our blood, the more likely that it will cause the body to retain water as salt would.  Another ingredient you should look out for is fructose (like high fructose corn syrup), a kind of sugar that’s harder for the body to break down compared to other kinds. This leads to gas, bloating, and even pain.


4. Dairy

Dairy, like milk and ice cream can cause gas, belly pain, and bloating if our bodies are not able to easily digest a dairy sugar called lactose. This is not usually serious, but the best way to find out if this is causing the pain and bloating is to eliminate dairy from your diet and see if it reduces the symptoms. 


5. Constipation

Sometimes we get irregular because of a few reasons, like dehydration, lack of fiber in diet, stress etc. This eventually causes discomfort and bloating. If it lasts for a few days, it is best to see a doctor.


6. Hormones

Ladies, do we have to spell this out? That time of the month where your body decides to hang on to every drop of water we drink. Cravings for crisps and sweets do not help either! Unfortunately, unlike most of the aforementioned reasons, this one is hard to avoid!
