DIY Natural Cosmetics for the Tree-Hugger in You

Organic cosmetics have come into vogue lately. It has gained significant traction because people are more health-conscious these days. However, name-brand organic and cruelty-free products tend to cost the arm and the leg that you are supposed to apply them on.

We’ve put together this list of natural creams, salves, and liniments that you can whip up at home using pretty much accessible ingredients.

Homemade Moisturizer

We’ve tackled this before in an earlier article but this is mostly for general use. It’s really simple. All you need is half a cup of coconut oil and six drops of any essential oil that you fancy. An optional ingredient is a teaspoon of vitamin E oil. Coconut oil solidifies in the cold months so you can use a whisk to bring it all together. Simple!

Sweet Berry Leg Scrub

You have the option of using blackberries, raspberries, or strawberries for this. Mash together three cups of white sugar, a third of a cup of coconut oil, about ten fresh sage leaves or about two tablespoons of dried, half a cup of berries. It’s great for exfoliating and moisturizing legs. It’s also perfect as a pre-shaving application. Keep in the fridge.

DIY Deodorant

We’re getting a bit too personal here but this is a great alternative if you prefer remaining stink-free without the chemicals. You’d need three tablespoons each of coconut oil and baking soda, two tablespoons of shea butter, two tablespoons of arrowroot powder or organic cornstarch. About three drops of your favourite fragrant essential oils are optional. Melt the butter and oil together in a double boiler or in the microwave. Add the rest of the ingredients. Mix well and leave to harden. Place in the fridge if you are a bit too excited. You can place the still soft mixture in an old empty deodorant stick tube. No need to refrigerate.

Cinnamon Mouthwash

Mouthwash is actually considered a cosmetic product believe it or not. This recipe is alcohol-free and peroxide-free so no stinging and burning. You need half a teaspoon each of ground cinnamon and baking soda, a teaspoon and a half of your choice honey, juice of two medium lemons, and a cup of warm water. Mix until the honey is diluted. Use as you would your usual mouthwash. Refrigerate for longevity.

Make-up Remover

We’ve now come full circle. This is for removing cosmetics now. The recipe is super simple. You’d need equal amounts of castor oil and extra-virgin olive oil. That’s for normal skin. For oily skin, a ratio of three parts castor oil to one part olive oil is recommended. One part castor oil to three parts olive oil is the ratio for dry skin. No alcohol. No irritants!
